Hughie Batherson

Hughie Batherson (B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed.) is the Vice-President of Student Affairs at l’Université Sainte-Anne in Nova Scotia.  For many years, he taught French immersion.  Having begun as an “absolute beginner” in French at Saint-Anne, he continued his studies in immersion and in university programmes at l’Université Sainte-Anne and at the University of Moncton.  He is a graduate of l’Université Sainte-Anne with a Bachelors of Arts (with a major in French), a Bachelors of Education, and a Masters of Education (with a specialisation in French as a Second Language).

A committed educator with a dynamic and engaging teaching style, Mr. Batherson believes in French-language education and its use in a practical context— both inside and outside of the classroom.  As a spokesperson for the cause of bilingualism in Canada, Hughie spreads the message that bilingual people thrive and have distinct advantages over their unilingual peers.

In 1998, l’Université Sainte-Anne asked Hughie to participate in the recruitment of students from the Atlantic Provinces.  Thanks to his dynamic and entertaining presentations, interest in French-language studies increased.  Furthermore, organisations such as Canadian Parents for French, French for the Future, l’Association canadienne des professeurs d’immersion, and the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers recruit Mr. Batherson to share his experiences as a student, educator, and Francophile.  Hughie has talked to more than 50,000 students at the primary, secondary, and university level.  He was the subject of articles in 25 ans de défis, 25 ans de succès (ACPI –CAIT 2004) and The State of French Second Language Education in Canada 2000 (CPF 2000).
