Emily Dobrich:
December 2011 Featured Student!

Hello, my name is Emily Dobrich. I am a grade twelve student in the
Core French program and have been studying French since I was six years
old. French was taught along with German in my elementary school
starting in grade one and continued to grade eight. This introduction to
learning languages has set me up with a desire to study foreign
languages. I began studying Spanish in high school and I have started
learning some Mandarin on my own. Moreover, from a very young age, I
have been exposed to my family’s language, Serbian.
I love my high school and take every opportunity to get involved. I
am Treasurer for the Students’ Council and work with a great group of my
peers bringing events to the student body so that their high school
experiences are memorable. These events include dances, as well as
events which build awareness in the school, like the 1000 acts of
kindness week, or events that help others in our community, such as our
annual canned food drive this winter. In addition, I love sports,
specifically running and have been a member of the cross-country team
for the past four years and last year joined the archery team.
Name: Emily Dobrich
Age: 17
Grade: 12
Hometown: London, Ontario
First language: English
Favourite music/artist: Pop/Rock, Thalia
Favourite food: Apple slices with cashew butter
Favourite French book: La Jeune Fille Venue du Froid
Favourite way to practice French:
Watching movies. I like this because it combines two styles of
learning, auditory and visual; a combination which I believe is more
effective for learning and comprehension.
Why I think it’s important to learn French:
Learning French gives a deeper understanding to a wealth of different
cultures and people. This helps establish a connection between people to
build and healthier, happier, freer world.
Best experience “en français”: Visiting Paris and Perpignon during a trip to Europe through my school’s language program.
The coolest francophone country is: Morocco. I love the heat and their cuisine is amazing.
In the future, how will I use my French? I will use my French when traveling to French speaking countries.
A place I’d like to go: Serbia, to visit my family.
As a Featured Student, Emily received the latest album from Andrea Lindsay, winner of the 2010 Juno Award for Best Francophone Album.
